Victoria’s Health Minister David Davis chose an AIDS 2014 pre-conference forum titled “Beyond Blame” to announce all states have commitment to the national goal of reducing new infections of HIV to zero by 2020 Australia wide. Davis acknowledged that laws such as Section 19A of Victoria’s Crimes Act seem to have little effect in stopping the transference of HIV may in fact perpetuate transference through stigma. As such he said his Government is committed to reviewing the Act to remove the impediments to public health policy.
Dean Beck spoke to the Chair of the HIV Legal Working Group following a press conference held on the issue by Victorian AIDS Council and Living Positive Victoria.
